Level: Graduate Duration: Three – Four years Award: Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
Synopsis
The Gender Doctoral program at the School of Women and Gender Studies is aimed at enabling students gain new knowledge so that they understand the gender dynamics better and if possible change them for the better and develop independent and critically minded researchers. The program equips the doctoral candidates with specialized fields.
The programme takes three to four years to complete on a full time basis with a maximum of seven years including withdrawals. Students pursue a doctoral by research only.
Requirements
An applicant is offered provisional admission upon submission of the following to the SGS:
A filled Application form in duplicate
Relevant Academic credentials – key ones include copies of Ordinary level and Advanced Level certificates and academic transcripts, undergraduate degree academic transcript and certificates, Master Degree certificate and transcript.
Three letters from academic referees
A 3-4 page synopsis/concept outlining the area of research interest.
A Master’s degree from a recognized University in a field relevant to the area of further studies. A student shall be granted provisional registration up to one academic year on the basis of acceptance of academic qualification and presentation of an acceptable research synopsis of 3-5 pages.
During the course of the academic year, a PhD student should develop a comprehensive research proposal for full admission with the help of senior members of the academic staff in the relevant fields of study.
The respective boards of Colleges/Schools should identify supervisors and Doctoral Committees for each student.
The Senate shall, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, appoint one or more supervisors to advise a candidate whose subject of special study or research has been approved and the candidate shall be required to work in close association with the supervisors and the Doctoral committee members.
When a Research proposal of a PhD student is found satisfactory by the School Higher Degrees and Research Committee after defending, a recommendation is sent to the DRGT Board for action. Thereafter, the student shall be granted a full registration as Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree student of Makerere University for a period of three to four years.
