On 6th April 2023, the Vice Chancellor, Makerere University, Professor Banabas Nawangwe commissioned a seven member Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions (GES-PI) committee. The seal is an initiative by UNDP Uganda.

In her remarks, Associate Prof. Sarah Ssali, Dean of School of Women and Gender Studies who as well doubles as the Committee Chairperson noted that the Gender Equality Seal will help public institutions, Makerere in particular to monitor their progress. It is a process that will help the university deliver on its gender gains but also become a Centre for gender excellence.
The committee comprises of; The Acting Director Human Resources, Mr. Sandu Lawrence, the University Bursar, Mr. Evarist Bainomugisha, the Director, Gender Mainstreaming Directorate, Dr. Euzobia Baine, the Dean of Students, Ms Winifred Kabumbuli, the Principal Public Relations officer, Ms Ritah Namisango, and the Principal Planner, Mr Emmanuel Kitamirike. Chaired by Associate Prof. Sarah Ssali, Mr Kiranda Ayub, is the secretary to the committee.

As he commissioned the committee members at the orientation meeting, Professor Banabas Nawangwe implored the team to work tirelessly at the certification process for the University to earn a Gold seal.
“Our goal should be to have a 50/50 gender parity across board” He said.
